CIAL to double capacity of solar power to 26 MW

According to CIAL officials the airport requires 50,000 units of power per day
KOCHI: The Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL), the company running the Cochin International Airport, has decided to double the installed capacity of solar power generation to 26 MW from its existing levels of 13.1 MW.
A meeting of the company board has decided to increase the installed capacity in view of the new international terminal coming up in the airport.
CIAL became the first fully solar powered airport in the world with the commissioning the 12 MW solar plant in August this year.
According to CIAL officials the airport requires 50,000 units of power per day. The consumption is expected to double with the commissioning of the new international terminal fast reaching completion.
The company has decided to augment the capacity taking into account the additional requirement, said airport officials.
The company plans to generate 2.4 MW by setting up 10,000 solar panels close to the existing plant. The major portion of the generation of 7 MW will be from solar panels to be set up over the three km long canal used for irrigation purposes.
With the completion of the project CIAL will have the distinction of the airport with maximum energy generation from the solar source in the world.
Since the inception of 12 MW unit in August the company has generated 51 lakh units of electricity taking the total generation from solar sources to 54 lakh units. The company was able to generate an additional 5 lakh units of electricity than its requirement.
