Chamber hails freight corridor decision

This year the terminal so far handled 366,377 containers compared to 346,204 containers in 2014
KOCHI: The decision of the state government to declare the national highway from Walayar check post in Palakkad to the International Container Transhipment Terminal at Vallarpadm ICTT) as a freight corridor will give a tremendous boost to the economic growth of the state.
“We appreciate the Government’s initiative for issuing instructions to the State Transport Department, Commercial Taxes and the Excise Department to permit self-sealed containers to use the ‘green channel’ facility at the Check Post”, CS Kartha president Cochin Chamber of Commerce and Industry said on Friday.
This facility was earlier restricted only to those containers that were sealed in the presence of customs/central excise officers. The decision will boost cargo movement through the ICTT, Karatha said. “We had in the past demanded the implementation of the freight corridor and green channel system”, he added.
The decision coming at a time when container movement from ICTT had shown an uptrend would further boost the process, Kartha said.
This year the terminal so far handled 366,377 containers compared to 346,204 containers in 2014.
