Karnataka: Anjaneya must go, says Opposition

Charges of corruption against Anjaneya rocked the Legislative Assembly

BENGALURU: Charges of corruption against social welfare minister H. Anjaneya rocked the Legislative Assembly on Thursday with BJP legislators staging a sit-in to press their demand for ouster of the controversial minister.

As soon as the proceedings commenced, leader of Opposition, Jagadish Shettar, raised the issue and questioned the government's intention in handing over the case to Criminal Investigation Department (CID) without taking any action against the minister.

In a video clip telecast by a Kannada television channel earlier this month, a man was purportedly seen placing a bundle of currency notes on a table in front of Mrs Anjaneya at their residence. The ‘sting operation’ was about a bribe of Rs 7 lakh reportedly offered for approval of a tender worth Rs 7 crore in a particular district.

Industries minister R.V. Deshpande, however, pointed out that the episode was under inquiry by officers of CID. When BJP legislators continued to shout slogans, the government managed to pass two bills -Karnataka Panchayat Raj (Second Amendment) Bill, 2015, and Karnataka Industries (Facilitation) (Amendment) Bill, 2015.
