Security beefed up at Taj Mahal after al Qaeda threat

CISF personnel and Special Forces have been asked to tighten their surveillance

Lucknow: The Taj Mahal was put on high alert on Thursday after receiving threat from Al Qaeda to attack the protected world heritage site, official sources said.

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel and Special Forces have been asked to tighten their surveillance and stay in constant contact with the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and other intelligence wings.

According to sources, the IB, on Wednesday, issued an alert that the Al Qaeda had threatened to attack the tourists spot and Taj Mahal topped the list followed by ‘Krishna Janambhoomi’ in Mathura and Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi.

“We have taken all necessary steps for the security of the monuments the police personnel have been directed to maintain a strict vigil. Maintenance of related equipments is also being done”, said CISF commandant Sudhir Kumar.

He further said that a close watch on persons coming to the Taj Mahal and other monuments was being kept through CCTV cameras and the ASI personnel were checking the belongings of the visitors.

Around 25,000 to 30,000 tourists visit the Taj Mahal every day and about 4,000 tourists are inside the premises at one time.
