Six BRR roads cut to drain water

Addressing mediapersons at the Ripon Buildings, Velumani said the city received rainfall not seen in 100 years
Chennai: The Chennai corporation had to cut open six of its newly laid 180 bus route roads (BRR) as the local body had no other option to drain stagnating rain water, according to municipal administration minister S.P. Velumani.
Addressing mediapersons at the Ripon Buildings, Velumani said the city received rainfall not seen in 100 years. “If you go back to November 1918, the city received 108 cm of rainfall. Now, in just 20 odd days, we have already received 114 cm with more predicted,” he said.
Velumani, however, defended the quality of the roads and said that the rainwater did not damage even one of the newly laid BRR. “We had to cut channels across the road in some areas in order to drain water,” he said.
A Central government-appointed team is set to survey Chennai's rain affected locations on Thursday. “We have yet to finalise the survey location and the loss estimate to be submitted to the team,” Corporation Commissioner Vikram Kapur said.
