‘I would be happy if Gurkeerat makes it to the final eleven’

Punjab cricketer’s mother hopeful of son donning whites in the second Test against Proteas

Mumbai: Owing to some death in the family, Punjab cricketer Gurkeerat Singh Mann didn't celebrate Diwali at home but when he was lately included in the Indian team for the second Test against South Africa starting in Bangalore on Saturday, his joy knew no bounds.

"My son got a direct call from the Indian cricket board and he conveyed the good news to us immediately,” said Gurkeerat's mom, Amarpreet.

"We had no Diwali celebrations this year but my son's late inclusion in the team has brought joy in our family.”

"Gurkeerat had gone to his sister's place here where he got the news on Wednesday. He could not wait further to break the good news to us,” she added.

The 30-year-old all rounder left on Thursday morning to join the squad but not before performing rituals at home.

Gurkeerat’s recent double ton in the Ranji Trophy (against Railways) and five-wicket haul (against Andhra) could be the reason behind his inclusion in the national team.

"He will again get a chance to be with the senior players but would be happy if he gets a chance to play in the final eleven,” Amarpreet asserted.

However, it remains to be seen whether the family’s wish comes true.
