Chennai techie commits suicide in Singapore; family has no time to mourn daughter’s death

Family awaits return of Deepika’s body

Chennai: Barely a day after news of their daughter’s suicide reached them, Srinivasan and Usha got busy in making arrangements to bring back the body from Singapore, leaving them with no time to mourn her loss.

On Wednesday, the parents got news that their daughter, 25-year-old Deepika, committed suicide by jumping off the 15th floor of an apartment building. All of Deepika’s relatives had gathered at her house at Sugunwar lane in Triplicane on Thursday, as her mother sat on the door step looking forlorn, her father, Srinivasan prepared to go to the High Commission.

The parents are busy with preparations to ensure that their daughter ‘s body and their two-month-year-old granddaughter makes her way home safely. “We have approached the High Commission, the Singapore Embassy and we have also e-mailed the external affairs ministry. However they have told us that they can only take action after the Singaporean police get back to them but they said they are taking all steps to do the needful,” said Mohan, Deepika’s cousin.

Mohan also added that Deepika’s husband is currently in the custody of the police and has agreed to let the body be taken back to India if the family incurred the expenses, the family is still unsure about whether or not Deepika’s child will be sent to them as well. In the words of neighbour, T. Kumar, the husband showed no remorse and when asked about the return of the child he said he would “courier the child to them.”

“He must have really pushed her to the edge as there is no other way that such a bright girl could have thought of suicide,” said one of her uncles. After under-graduation from Meenakshi College, Deepika got an MBA degree from Anna University, “She was a very intelligent girl, very calm, she even spoke in a very soft voice and was very well-mannered,” said a neighbour. Incidentally Deepika’s younger sister is also believed to have committed suicide three years ago, according to a family friend.
