Saline winds put Kozhikode Corporation out of order

Electronic equipment, gadgets damaged
KOZHIKODE: When the new Council takes over the reins of the Kozhikode Corporation administration, there will be no computers, electronic gadgets or air-conditioners for the officials at the office. The saline winds from the Arabian Sea have already damaged all computers, air-conditioners and other electronic gadgets inside the corporation office.
The new Council will have to find a financial allocation for repurchase of all these equipment.
“All these computers and air-conditioners that one sees at the corporation office are just boxes of rusty metal. None of these terminals work and no amount of repair could salvage them due to the continuous salty wind from the sea. We have been complaining about these dysfunctional gadgets but no action had been taken so far. We hope that the new council addresses this as an urgent issue,” a senior bureaucrat at Kozhikode corporation told Deccan Chronicle.
Apart from the fancy of having a sea-facing office, these officials say that continuous exposure to the sea breeze causes headache, dehydration and nausea among emp-loyees.
“All the electronic and electrical gadgets on the seaside have been damaged. Apart from causing damage to the equipment, continuous sea breeze is also causing us trouble. It is fun for 10 minutes but sitting in this breeze for about 8 hours a day and six days a week is extremely tiring,” another official added.
Apart from the corporation office, the office of All India Radio and luxurious apartments on the beach front face the same problem.
Many flat owners, who had paid a premium to get the beach facing apartment, are now trying to sell them off as their electrical and electronic equipment corrode fast.
“It is a real headache. We were very romantic to have a beach facing apartment and had paid through our nose for that. But very soon we realized that this could not be made our regular home as we could not use our electronic and electrical gadgets here,” Neena K., an apartment owner said.
