Opposition targets Narendra Modi, TDP over special status for Andhra Pradesh

Congress called for burning of Modi's effigy to protest his silence on special status and package

Hyderabad: The opposition on Thursday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who laid the foundation stone for a new capital of Andhra Pradesh in Guntur district, and the ruling TDP for their silence on the demand of special category status for the state.

YSR Congress Party asked its workers to stage protest in various forms tomorrow. Y S Jaganmohan Reddy, opposition leader in the Assembly, accused the Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu of throwing cold water on people's aspirations.

Naidu compromised with the Centre and did not put pressure on the PM on the issue, he said in a statement.

Congress called for burning of Modi's effigy to protest his silence on special status and package for Rayalaseema and north coastal areas in his speech.

"The people of AP expected a categorical assurance from the PM on the special category status besides implementation of all provisions in the AP Reorganisation Act. However, they were thoroughly disappointed," the Andhra Pradesh Congress said in a statement.

Accusing Modi of cheating the people of AP, it said he would pay the price in future for not honouring the election promises.
