October 24 public holiday for Muharram

Crescent of the lunar month of Muharram was not sighted on Oct. 13, says Chief Kazi
Chennai: Tamil Nadu government on Monday declared Oct. 24 a public holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act for Muharram instead of the previously notified October 23. The Chief Kazi to the Government of TN has said that the crescent of the lunar month of Muharram was not sighted on Oct. 13.
Hence, the ‘Yoem-e-Shahadath’ (10th day of Muharram) would be observed on Oct. 24 in TN and not on Oct. 23, a Government Order said quoting the request of the state chief Kazi to declare Oct. 24 a public holiday.
“The government has decided to declare 24 October 2015 a public holiday for Muharram instead of Oct. 23, under the Negotiable Instruments Act,” the order said adding a gazette notification.
