Sex and extortion racket: Racketeer’s wife takes own life

The group had trapped ten other people similarly in a year and demanded only less than Rs 10 lakhs from them

Kochi: The sex and extortion racket case took a new turn when the wife of a gang member committed suicide in their flat at Kakkanad, near here, on Friday.

Jazniya Beevi, 22, wife of Sai Sankar, slit her vein and hanged herself on the fan around 6 a.m. in the Greens Cape apartment at Kollamkudimugal. The police had arrested Sai Sankar and four others of the gang earlier for extortion and blackmailing of a Chottanikkara- based businessman.

The police recovered a suicide note left behind by Jazniya Beevi in which she said that she was ending her life as she felt sad and betrayed by her husband’s arrest.

It was through newspapers that she came to know of the arrest. Her mother saw her slitting her vein and rushed out to call people from the neighbouring apartments. But by the time they reached the place, she had hanged herself in her bedroom. She was alive when she was taken to the hospital but died on the way.

According to the caretaker of the apartment, it was less than a year ago that she and Sai Sankar started living in the apartment and she was 4-month pregnant.

According to police sources, Sai Sankar was working as the marketing executive of Motorola when they met and developed a relationship.

They married nearly a year ago ignoring the objections raised by their parents. Her family lives at Pukkattupadi and it was on Thursday morning that her mother came to the flat to spend a day with her.

Police on further investigation into the five-member extortion gang realised that almost all of them were leading decent life except Narayana Das against whom many vehicle theft and criminal cases were registered in various police stations.

It also came out that the businessman was ready to settle for Rs 10 to 30 lakhs but the excess greed of the gang to snatch Rs 2 crore landed them in trouble.

According to the information provided by the police, the group had trapped ten other people similarly in a year and demanded only less than Rs 10 lakhs from them.

However, they couldn’t snatch even a single rupee from any of them as they failed to execute their plan correctly.

Here the gang trapped the businessman effectively, and he would have given the amount if it was affordable.

One of the arrested, Sai Sankar, was a marketing executive of a private mobile service provider, and he belonged to a well settled Menon family near Pisharikavu Temple in Eroor.

It was just three days before the crime, Sameer met Das through Balu, the brother of the latter, and he was leading a peaceful family life at Mannarkkad in Palakkad.

He was a bit financially weak, and Das exploited it with enticing offers to overcome his financial crisis.

The young Dibin had finished his graduation, and it was at a gymnasium in Vyttila that he met Das. He lured him the same way Sudheer was lured.

The lone woman member of the gang was a model by profession, and her father is from Jharkhand and mother from Perumbavoor.

She had a desire to become a cine artist, and Das met her at a gymnasium for ladies in Vyttila. He lured her offering a role in a movie that he claimed he was producing.
