Bengaluru BPO staffer's rape: Police get accused for 14 days

Police will carry out spot inspection, reconstruction of incident today

Bengaluru: The two accused in the gang-rape of a 22-year-old BPO employee, Sunil and Yogesh, were produced before the 3rd Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Court on Wednesday afternoon and the police sought their custody for 14 days, which was granted by the court. The accused will be in police custody till October 21.

On Thursday, the police will be taking the two accused for a spot mahajar (inspection) throughout the route for reconstruction of the gruesome incident – starting from the spot where they picked up the victim to the place where they committed the crime and then back to the spot where they dropped the victim, said Rohini Katoch Sepat, DCP South East Division. “We will also be doing a timeline of incidents during the crime,” she added.

The identification parade will also be scheduled during the 14-day police custody of the duo after checking with the available dates of the executive magistrate that will be communicated to the victim, who will be present for identifying the culprits, said Rohini.

Display boards for cabs

In the wake of gang-rape incident, the city traffic police plans to make it mandatory for cab services, including cabs and tempo-travellers plying across the city, to have ‘display boards’.

M.A. Saleem, Additional Commissioner of Police, (Traffic) said that this would not only ensure accountability among drivers, but also instill a sense of fear that drivers are under the scanner. He also said that the traffic police in association with the agencies concerned are planning to train women drivers who can be employed in the IT-BT and BPO industries and also schools and colleges.

Accused Sunil

Sunil was most brutal

Sunil is the prime accused in the gangrape of 22-year-old BPO staffer on Saturday night. He is the cousin of the other arrested accused Yogesh. “Sunil (23), who is four years younger than Yogesh, was at the wheels of the van when the victim asked him to stop near Ayappa Temple where she had to get down,” Ms Rohini Katoch Sepat, DCP, Southeast Division, said.

“The victim has stated in her complaint that it was Sunil who was the most aggressive during her ordeal of over three hours in the parked Tempo Traveler near an under-construction building off Old Airport Road,” she said.
