Chennai bike gang snatches grandson from woman, flees with gold ornaments

The boy, Harshan, son of Arun Kumar, a builder, was traced by neighbours who followed the criminals in their vehicles

Chennai: In what seems to be a new modus operandi by criminals, two men on a bike snatched a two-year-old child from the hands of his grandmother who was feeding him on Tuesday in front of their house in suburban Raja Kilpauk.

Later they abandoned the child near a swimming pool at Tambaram-Velachery Road after taking away a gold chain and bracelet worn by the child. The boy, Harshan, son of Arun Kumar, a builder, was traced by neighbours who followed the criminals in their vehicles.

According to the police the incident happened around 9 pm on Tuesday when Amudha, grandmother of Harshan, was feeding him in front of her house in Maruthi Nagar. Two men came on a bike. The rider was wearing a helmet. They asked Amudha for direction of an address. And as she tried to explain, the pillion snatched the boy from her and sped away.

A shocked Amudha started crying for help and after listening to her, a few neighbours came rushing and chased the criminals. The two went for nearly 2 km before leaving the kid near a swimming pool after removing his gold chain and bracelet. Those who chased the duo took the boy back to his house and handed him over to his grandmother.
