Teardown: The guts of an Apple iPhone 6S

The iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus have already been ripped open

It’s just been a few days that Apple launched the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus in its stores. The phones are designed pretty much identical to the older generation iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, except for a complete overhaul of the internal guts. The iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus have already been ripped open and the guts show that Apple has not done much with the internals, though they have changed almost everything.

iExperts, one of the leading specialists in gadget repairs, had their hands on the new iOS entrants and as usual, took it apart to show us what the internals look like. According to the engineers, Apple has made a few notable improvements on the 6S:

  • Screen is now adhered to the housing. This will prevent dust from getting in, and minimise water getting in if accidentally submerged. This will also prevent the annoying ‘clicking’ when pressing down on the screen caused by screen separation if the housing is bent.
  • Sticky foam padding around all the connectors. Again this will minimise water damage to the connectors should water get into the phone. It may also prevent chip damage from clumsy DIY repairers.
  • Stronger screen support. With all that pressing down for the ‘Force Touch’, Apple has made the screen support stronger. Whether the stronger glass withstands drops remains to be seen.

iExperts mentioned that the iPhone was surprisingly simple to pry open. The screws remain the same—Penelope heads, and the display was stuck to the casing with simple adhesive. The reason for adhesive could be dust and water prevention to an extent since the previous generation handsets were prone to dust and water.

As for the internals, the iPhone 6 and 6S have almost identical looking components with just a few changes needed to incorporate the new Apple A9 chipset. The battery capacity has been reduced by around 5 per cent, the old motorized vibrator makes way for a newer induction-based Apple ‘Taptic Engine’ and new hex screws are added for the logic board.
