KOCHI: The state cabinet on Wednesday decided to sanction additional posts of two teachers for Mamalakandam UP School near Kothamangalam, which was upgraded as high school two years ago. The matter was taken up in the cabinet as a high priority item in view of the two-day hunger strike by two students of the school demanding posting of the teachers.
The government also sanctioned additional posts of teachers for PRDS LP School, Kottayam, which was recently upgraded as UP School.
The students of Mamalakandam, Yadu Krishnan and Sandhya, ended the hunger strike by Wednesday noon as the District Education Officer (DEO) of Kothamangalam produced a written order from the state government in this regard at the venue of the strike. The tribal hamlets in Kuttampuzha near Kothamangalam, have no other schools.
Though it was upgraded as a high school two years ago, no new teacher post was sanctioned. Though 24 students successfully passed from class IX to class X this year, they could not continue their study due to lack of teachers. Some parents, who could afford it, shifted their students to other schools.
The parents of the remaining students and the students themselves declared a blockade of the District Education Office which was later converted into a hunger strike.
Since the government had not sanctioned the teacher posts, the education department was not in a position to post teachers on temporary basis also.
