Tamil Nadu to disburse Rs 5 lakh to HCV infected

The counsel for the petitioner submitted that the third infected person, a woman, Rajani, passed away

Chennai: The state government has informed Madras high court that a solatium of Rs 5 lakh would be disbursed to HCV infected persons when they underwent dialysis at Government Stanley Medical College and Hospital before undergoing kidney transplants.

The petitioner, Jayaram Venkatesan, sought a direction to the authorities to list out the patients who underwent dialysis from March 1, 2014, till date for treatment for kidney failure and Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) at Stanley Hospital and order specialized treatment to them on priority basis free of cost to the affected victims and award adequate compensation.

When the matter came up before the first bench of Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam, the government pleader informed that a compensation of '3 lakh has been disbursed and a further Rs 2 lakh per head has been sanctioned to be disbursed shortly.

The counsel for the petitioner submitted that the third infected person, a woman, Rajani, passed away. Details of Rajani would be given to government pleader for processing the claim for the benefit of her legal heirs.
