Kakkayam on state tourism map

Aryadan Muhammed to launch Kakkayam tourism project

KOZHIKODE: Once an unsung tourism destination in Malabar region, the Kakkayam dam area is now getting ready to enter the state’s tourism map with a wide range of projects undergoing in a full swing.

Power minister Aryadan Muhammed will inaugurate the Kakkayam tourism project on September 14.

This is among the first tourism destinations in the district under the Kerala Hydel Tourism Centre (KHTC) which is a subsidiary of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB).

The boating facility has started its trial run. The KSEB earned close to Rs 65,000 in just a day during Onam vacation, which is evidence for the scope of tourism in the region.

Boating in the dam reservoir, cycling in the forest zone, children’s park and sightseeing trip facilities to the nearby dams are among some of the developmental activities under way.

Shivadasab K., who is in charge of the project, said Kakkayam would be opened for more tourism developmental activities in near future, and now only the first phase will be opened for public.

“Including trekking, cable car and other adventure tourism activities, Kakkayam in a short span will get a prominent stature in the state’s tourism map,” he said.

“Initially we are stressing on the boat ride that has already turned out to be a hit with the public. This is opening up new employment opportunities for the locals, especially women and the tribespeople for whom special stalls have been set up to sell their authentic products.”
