Bengaluru: BJP plans rallies in city

Party workers will stage a dharna in front of the Town Hall today

Bengaluru: Opposing the ‘unholy alliance’ of Congress and JD(S) in BBMP, the BJP has decided to resort to a series of agitations in the city. Party city unit core committee leaders met here on Thursday to discuss the BJP’s course of action to oppose the alliance which could win the mayoral polls in BBMP.

Though BJP got 100 of the 198 seats in the just concluded BBMP elections, Congress and JD(S) have entered into a pact to ensure it does not come to power, said party leaders.

On Friday, the city unit will stage a dharna in front of Town Hall. City leaders have directed 100 workers from each Assembly constituency in Bengaluru to be present during the protest, said BJP MLC Ashwathnarayana. On Saturday, all 100 newly elected corporators will submit a memorandum to Governor Vajubhai Vala, requesting him to intervene in the matter.

Speaking to reporters, former deputy Chief Minister R. Ashok defended his decision not to give in to the pressure of the six independent corporators. “We are opposing resort politics because the party paid a price for engaging in resort politics in the past”, he said. He denied any mistake on the part of the city leadership with regard to the strategy to capture power in BBMP.
