Hyderabad: Humane Society International-India rescued three Mudhol Hounds from appalling conditions from a dog breeder in Hyderabad on Thursday.
After receiving an anonymous tip that a dog owner was keeping Mudhol hounds tied in a vacant plot used as a dump yard opposite the parking lot of Chilkur Balaji temple, HSI-India officials went to the spot and rescued the dogs.
HSI-India claimed that the owner was breeding the Indian pedigree illegally and confronted him. After prodding, he agreed to surrender the dogs to HSI-India. With police assistance an undertaking was taken in writing from the breeder.
An official of the HSI-India, said, “The practice of dog breeding must be completely eradicated. Recently the Law Commission recommended that the Centre examine the report, ‘Need to Regulate Pet Shops and Dog and Aquarium Fish Breeding’.”
“All over India, a vast majority of puppies sold in pet stores come from illegal breeders who do not maintain any hygiene or basic standard for their upkeep. Hundreds of dogs are confined in substandard conditions and denied adequate food, veterinary care and socialization in breeder houses. All these results in high mortality rate in these illegally bred dogs.”
