Off to China, as India's Mrs

Kochi’s own Iris Maju will represent the country at the Mrs World pageant
The name doesn’t give anything away. But Iris Maju, who has been crowned as Mrs India 2015, is from Kochi. The first South Indian to represent the country at the Mrs World Pageant to be held in China in November, she has been working as a teacher in an Army school. Her husband, a colonel, is also from Thevara in Kochi.
“There were 300 ladies and I am so glad that I made it. At the same time, I am aware that the title makes me more responsible towards society than before,” she says. She goes on to stress that all women are beautiful no matter what their skin colour is or what their background is.
At the same, she agrees that it is the army life that made her “an organised and socially responsible woman”. “It helped me see life from a different perspective,” says Iris, who loves her homeland and mother tongue. Her crowning ceremony was held on September 1 in Kochi at her insistence. “I am proud of being a Malayali and hence I told the organisers to do my crowning ceremony in Kochi. It was my dream,” she says. Earlier this year, Iris had won the Mrs Planet runner-up title and was selected as the Community Ambassador at Mrs India National.
Iris says what attracted her to Mrs India was the social cause attached to it. “I was associated with many green initiatives. When I realised that this platform could provide me more opportunities to work for the welfare of the society, I decided to give it a try. Mrs India contest is linked to diabetes awareness. Also, it is not just about glamour, but also looks for women of substance. Here, women are not models, they are role models and it is more challenging than Miss India,” says Iris.
How does she define the concept, ‘woman of substance’? “For me, a woman can be termed so if she knows the art of balancing her family life, career and passion. That makes her a gem. She must be a beauty with brain.”
