Violence in Gujarat has pained the nation, says Narendra Modi in 'Mann ki Baat' programme

Modi touched various topics including Jan Dhan Yojana and the land ordinance issue

New Delhi: In his first reaction on the recent Gujarat violence over the quota issue, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said the incidents, which claimed at least ten lives, had upset the entire nation.

"The recent incidents of violence in Gujarat has upset the entire nation. Whatever happens to the land of Gandhi and Sardar Patel, the nation is shocked and pained first," he said in his radio programme 'Mann Ki Baat'.

Appreciating the people of Gujarat, Modi said their cooperation helped in controlling the situation. "In a very short time, my Gujarati brothers and sisters controlled the situation. They played an active role and did not let the situation worsen and peace was restored in the state.

Urging people to work together for development, he said that development alone will solve all problems. "Peace, unity and brotherhood are the only correct way and we have to walk together on the path of development as only it is the solution of our problems," he said.

Modi wished the people a happy Onam. He also wished the women of the nation a very happy Raksha Bandhan.

Modi spoke about the financial plans and schemes launched by his government. He congratulated the people for opening bank accounts under the Jan Dhan Yojana, which till now has gathered more than Rs. 22 crores this year.

"I got to know about Sufi traditions in the last few days. I felt very good. Whatever religion one follows, one should get to know about Sufism," Modi said.

He also spoke about his invitation to visit Buddhist sites.

Modi said that there are many rumours being spread about the NDA Government's revised Land Acquisition Bill, but promised that the final ordinance will benefit the farmers in the days to come.

"There are many rumours that are being spread about the Land Acquisition Bill due to which farmers have been scared throughout the country. We do not want that," said Modi.

"We had issued an ordinance and I have decided that it comes to an end tomorrow. But the 13 pointers in the ordinance that will benefit the farmers will be issued.
