Guntur: The military operations demand far more technology, power and reach in the military machines to overcome ‘surprise’ situations thrown upon at the India forces from unexpected quarters at unanticipated moments, observed S. Christopher, secretary, Defence Research & Development Organisation, during the convocation of Vignan’s University on Saturday in Guntur on Saturday.
Mr Christopher’s remarks gain importance in the wake of the frequent violations of ceasefire on the international border by Pakistan in the recent times.
He recalled the assertion of former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam that ‘strength respects strength’, and said that the ‘deterrence’ factor had the power of creating a fear psychosis on adversaries inhibiting them into quiet inaction. Mr Christopher added that the armed forces need to be on a high alert all the time and be ready to face ‘surprise situations’ squarely with appropriate weapon systems and well thought out tactics.
Mr. Christopher said that the threat perception and an assessment of required measures to counter anticipated surprise situations by the defence services and realising realistic big and small defence systems to match such perceived threats by the R & D establishments should become a real-time on-going activity side-by- side with the long-term re-equipment plan for defence.
