Thanjavur: One killed as train hits pilgrims on bridge

Anna Mary died on the spot while the other two were injured
Thanjavur: A woman pilgrim was killed and two others including the daughter of the former were injured when they were hit by a train while walking on the railway bridge over Grand Anicut canal near Thanajvur on Wednesday.
The deceased was G. Anna Mary (63) of Meenakshi Nagar, Mettupatti, Dindigul and the injured were Manoranjitha Mary (38) (daughter of the deceased) and S. Arul Mary of Pillaiyarnatham in Pithalaipatti in Athur taluk in Dindigul district.
According to the police, the three were part of a group of devotees going to Velankanni church for the festival of ‘Lady of our Health’ on padayatra. They took the railway track from Tiruchi to Thanjavur.
As they were walking on the railway bridge over the Grand Anicut canal near Thanjavur, the Karaikal-Tiruchi passenger, which came on the track at 10.15 am, hit them.
Anna Mary died on the spot while the other two were injured. Among the injured, Manoranjitha Mary was thrown into the flowing water in the Grand Anicut canal below the bridge.
Arul Mary, another injured person was sent to Thanjavur Medical College hospital for treatment and body of Anna Mary was sent for post-mortem. Search is on for the injured Manoranjitha Mary who fell into the GA canal.
The PWD has been asked to reduce water released into the canal to facilitate the search. K. Palanichamy, Inspector of Railway police and K. Kavitha, sub-inspector visited the spot. It is said that the driver of the train applied brakes but it could not be stopped immediately.
As the injured persons could not be spotted, the driver informed the railway authorities at Thanjavur junction and moved the train. Those who were taking bath called 108 ambulance and rushed Arul Mary and body of Anna Mary to hospital.
