267 seats in JNTU, Osmania University fall vacant

Many students chose to join NITs, IIITs
Hyderabad: In a first, around 250 seats in prestigious government-run engineering colleges are vacant. Osmania University and JNTU Hyderabad Colleges of Engineering, counted among the most prestigious, have 48 and 66 vacant seats respectively.
This happened as several students who got seats in these colleges dropped out to join National Institutes of Technology and Indian Institute of Inform-ation Technology through the spot round held by the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB).
The intake in government engineering colleges stood at 3,041 this year. As per official figures, 267 seats are vacant. Most of the seats are in sought-after branches like Computer Science Engineering and Electronics and Communication Engineering.
“The students who join us also get good ranks in national entrance exams. So naturally when the spot rounds were held, they left to join NITs,” said principal of Osmania University College of Engineering Prof. S. Ramachandram.
Rules don’t allow spot admissions in government colleges. To make matters more complicated, there is another rule, which states that no student can be admitted a month after classes commence. This means that the government has to take a decision before the end of this month.
Additionally, the Supreme Court guidelines also prohibit admissions after Aug-ust 15, but a way around it can also be found.
“The government can take a policy decision, may be for this year as an exceptional case, and fill seats through a spot round,” an Osmania University CoE Professor said.
Telangana State government officials, who are looking into the issue, haven’t found a solution. “If we do hold a spot round somehow to fill these seats, students from top private colleges would come. Then their seats will fall empty and they would seek refuge again,” a senior Telangana State Council of Higher Education official said.
