Tamil Nadu leading transplantation centre in country

Dhanasekhar is among the 630 donors who had saved several hundreds of lives this year alone
Chennai: Life ended abruptly for 25-year-old Dhanasekhar (name changed), a private firm employee. He was proceeding to his office on his two-wheeler and lost control of his bike while attempting to avoid ramming into a lorry that came in the opposite direction and fell.
He was rushed to the emergency ward of the Stanley Hospital here where he was later declared brain dead. He was put on ventilator till his heart stopped beating; and in the mean-time the transplant coordinator convinced his family members to donate his organs.
While his liver and kidneys were utilised by the GH, his heart saved another life. He is among the 630 donors who had saved several hundreds of lives this year alone. And despite Tamil Nadu emerging as a leading transplantation centre in India for cornea, hand, heart, kidney, liver, lungs and pancreas, the need for organs and tissues for transplantation still remains enormous.
In about eight months that is till August 13 this year, out of 630 cadaver donations, 36 heart transplants, 23 lungs and 64 heart valves were performed. Cornea, Liver and Kidney transplants topped with 176, 108 and 211 transplants respectively. In addition, skin, small bowel and blood vessels accounted for the rest. Nearly six hearts and six lungs from seven donors were shared by other states.
According to Dr. P. Soundarajan, Consultant Nephrologist, Sri Ramchandra Medical College, Chennai, cornea transplantation is the largest transplantation programme in the country with as many as 25,000 procedures every year.
Though still much short of the required one lakh corneas every year, eye donation had seen encouraging increase over the past two decades. “But, cornea is the not the only requirement of a patient, there are other vital organs that a patient needs and 95 % of them are dying in the waiting list. A boost is yet to come for other organ donation programs in India,” he says.
