KSRTC depot still loss-making entity

Empty trips to Pavangad recorded due to lack of parking space in depot

KOZHIKODE: The government had spent more than Rs 55 crores to build twin towers to house the KSRTC terminal at Kozhikode. This imposing structure, however, has not brought any good news either for KSRTC or its employees.

The scheduled buses from this depot continue their empty trips to Pavangad depot during night hours as there is no parking space for buses available at the newly constructed terminal.

Space is not even available for buses on scheduled trips and employees alleged that money has been wasted due to improper planning.

KSRTC had already suffered huge losses due to the 5 year plus delay in completion of works of the terminal and it continues to suffer losses as buses are forced to make empty trips to Pavangad and back every day.

As per estimates there are more than 95 daily schedules from Kozh-ikode depot and most of these buses are forced to make empty trips to Pavangad in the night and return in the morning.

“Every bus is making this 16 km trip everyday without any passengers. Hundreds of litres of diesel are being spent for this and it is a huge loss. The Corporation could have saved this money if they had planned the station in a better way, allocating space for the buses for parking,” a KSRTC employee on request of anonymity told DC.

The transport minister had made tall claims about providing more parking spaces inside the terminal during the inauguration of the terminal but no steps in this direction have been taken up so far.
