Khammam: Dummugudem Lift Irrigation Project, a boon

The project redesign will help dry lands in Yellandu and Khammam

Khammam: Redesigning of Dummugudem Lift Irrigation Project will be a boon to Khammam district. The dry lands in Yellandu, Tirumapalyapalem, Khammam Rural and Kusumanchi mandals will be irrigated with the new plan.

Previously, it was planned to lift 80 tmc water from Godavari river at Pamulapadu in the monsoon and taken to tail-pond at Nagarjunasagar reservoir. The project was planned to stabilise the aycut area of Nagarjunasagar project and make available water in Srisailam Project to send it to the Rayalaseema projects through Pothireddypadu.

The protagonists of Telangana found fault with the project saying it would hit the interests of the Telangana people. TRS government asked the engineering experts to make alternative plans for Dummugudem Lift irrigation Project. The officials evolved two alternate plans to the present one.

As per the Plan-1, about 84,000 acre will be irrigated by digging a channel from Godavari through Dummugudem-Bayyaram Palair - Marripeda. In the second plan, about 79,000 acre in Khammam district can be irrigated through Dummugudem-Rollapadu-Palair irrigation project. The engineers were asked to study both the schemes and submit feasibility reports on them. Sources said that the government is in favour of taking up the second plan to irrigate the dry lands in Khammam district. minister for roads and buildings T. Nageswara Rao is very interested in the lift irrigation project and he has already explained it to Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao. The water will be brought to Palair reservoir in the second plan.
