Employees hit as temples starved of funds

The Devaswom Board had refused to give funds citing that the temple had a revenue of over Rs 10 lakh

Kozhikode: The state government’s lethargy in sanctioning funds for the temples has left many employees in a deep crisis. Several employees like those of Karikkad temple in Manjeri have not received salaries for the last four years.

The Devaswom Board had refused to give funds citing that the temple had a revenue of over Rs 10 lakh.

Malabar Devaswom Employees Union state committee leader K. Parameswaran told DC that funds are given to temples based on the revenue.

The temples with over Rs 10 lakh revenue per year would get only 50 percent of the expenses as management funds by the state government whereas those with poor revenue would receive more funds.

“But what the government failed to assess is the functioning of many satellite temples that survive on the revenue from the main temple and also many unlisted employees who are yet to be recognised by the Devaswom Board,” he added.
