Dr APJ Abdul Kalam immortalised in life-size bronze statue

Tributes continue to pour in for former President of India Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam
Chennai: Tributes continue to pour in for former President of India Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. This time Chennai-based sculptor Shihan Hussaini has immortalised Dr Kalam in the form of a life-size bronze statue with some added interesting features.
Hussaini, who hit the headlines recently for crucifying himself with nails through his hands and feet to a wooden cross as a prayer for M. J. Jayalalithaa to return as Chief Minister, has sculpted the statue in two weeks and will unveil it on mission premises at Besant Nagar on Friday.
He began work on the day Dr Kalam was laid to rest, he told Deccan Chronicle. “The statue will be 5.5 feet tall with angelic wings towering 3 feet higher than him. Also, a 22.5 feet PSLV C22 rocket is put up behind and a giant star lurking in the background. I have named the composition as Angle of India. Dr Kalam will be seen standing in front of a lectern with a mike addressing, waving and blessing viewers,” he said.
Sculpting with injured hands was tough. He also had to stand for long hours with legs that are yet to heal from the injury of the nails. “It was painful, but I managed,” he said.
He has requested CM Jayalalithaa to unveil a similar statue at the island near Besant Nagar.
He has also handed over a bronze copy of the original statue. The total cost of making the statue is estimated at over Rs 11 lakh.
