Army officials said a group of heavily-armed militants had sneaked in on Saturday night

Srinagar: Two militants and an Army jawan were killed and two other jawans injured in a series of gunbattles between the Army and militants close to the Line of Control in J&K’s Kupwara district since Saturday.

Police and Army sources said on Sunday two militants were killed in a fierce firefight in Jumagund Gujjar Nar area of Keran sector. Army officials said a group of heavily-armed militants had sneaked into the state on Saturday night, but was soon challenged by Indian troops.

“In the ensuing encounter, that is still going on, two infiltrating terrorists were killed and our jawans are trying to neutralise the others in the group,” a defence spokesman said.

He added that the militants’ bodies could be seen lying near the LoC fence but, were not retrieved as heavy firing was still going on. Another gunbattle between militants and the Army was reported from a forest near Keran.

Earlier, one Army jawan was killed and two others injured when attacked by militants who may have infiltrated from across the LoC in Tangdhar sector on Saturday.
Defence spokesman Col. N.N. Joshi said the fighting between the militants and the Army had spread to nearby Taya woods.

Army sources said the operation was stopped on Saturday night due to darkness to avoid further casualties. Reports said that a group of five to six militants infiltrated in this area on August 7-8 night.

It was challenged and asked to surrender by Indian soldiers, but the militants responded by opening fire, resulting in the spot death of rifleman Bashir Ahmed War. Two other soldiers were injured.
