13th Federation Cup National Junior Athletics Championships: Kerala runners rule relay

Men’s, women’s teams clinch top prizes at Federation Cup athletics meet
Hyderabad: Kerala sprinters ruled the roost, winning both the men’s and women’s 4x100 metres relay events on Day Two of the 13th Federation Cup National Junior Athletics Championships at the G.M.C. Balayogi Athletics Stadium in Gachibowli on Saturday.
The women’s team set a new meet record, clocking 48 seconds to clinch the top prize in the event. Karnataka (49.56) and Tamil Nadu (49.80) claimed silver and bronze medals respectively.
In the men’s event, Kerala clinched gold with a timing of 42.16 seconds. Haryana finished one-tenth of a second behind the winners while Karnataka (42.59) settled for third.
There was more delight in store for Kerala, who swept the pole vault competition. Mariya Jaison set a new national record in pole vault when she cleared 3.50 metres for the gold medal. Shani Shaji (3.10 metres) and Anaswara C. (3.00) won silver and gold respectively.
Tamil Nadu’s A. Sathish Kumar was the swiftest in the men’s 110-metre hurdles. Sathish claimed top honours in 14.41 seconds. Sharanbir Singh of Punjab was a close second at 14.50 seconds while Haryana’s Anmol Singh clocked 14.57 seconds to take third place.
Maharahstra’s Ankita Sunil won gold in the women’s 100-metre hurdles with a timing of 14.79 seconds, followed by Dibi Sebastian of Kerala (14.96) and West Bengal’s Rokiya Khatun (15.01).
Uttar Pradesh race-walker Priyanka finished first in the 10,000 metres event, clocking 50 minutes and 41.29 seconds. Rajasthan’s Bhawna Jat (52:59.66) took silver while Mary Margaret (54:11.87) of Kerala stood third on the podium.
In the men’s 10,000 metres race walk, Uttarakhand’s Bhagavan Singh (44:53.56) finished ahead of Punjab’s Mahinder Partap (44:56.95) and UP’s Shailesh Kumar (45.00.08).
