Visakhapatnam gets its own Dabbawalas

The team consists 12 members who deliver about 500 lunch boxes daily
Visakhapatnam: There is no substitute for fresh, home cooked meal. To deliver the same to hungry office employees during lunch hours, Ch. Dhanunjay Naidu, a young graduate from Visakhapat-nam, launched Vizag’s Dabbawala in May 2015. Inspired by the Mumbai dabbawalas, rendering unflinching services for 125 years, he put this idea into action in association with a friend, after perusing their delivery system. The initiative is doing well.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Dhanunjay said, “Many of my friends leaving the office at 12 noon to hand over the lunch boxes to their wards intrigued me a lot, which sparked a business idea in my brain. Later, I came to know about the jaw-dropping delivery system of Mumbai dabbawalas and studied their business model.” Currently, the Vizag’s Dabbawala team consists of 12 members and delivers about 500 lunch boxes to various schools, colleges and offices a day in Vizag.
“Delivering freshly-cooked home meals with punctuality and precision to the customers is our prime motto. Even if the customers want food from hotels, we are there to help them out,” said Naresh, a dabbawala.
Within a radius of 4 km, the dabbawalsas are presently charging Rs 260 a month for a lunch box. Vizag’s Dabbawalas also make and sell healthy home-cooked meals and tiffins such as pulka accompanied with a variety of vegetable curries.
N. Sudeep, a call-centre employee, who got a lunch box through Vizag’s Dabbawala, explained, “Restaurant fare is tantalising to the taste buds can never ever replace home food.”
G. Baburao, a co-founder, said that currently they deliver only in the central part of the city. “Once the orders swell up, we will start operations in Gantyada and Rushikonda.”
