Kayaking in deep troubled waters

Lack of proper guidelines one reason

KOZHIKODE: While whitewater kayaking in the rivers of high ranges in Malabar proved a big hit this year with participants from twelve countries testing their adventure talents, the organisers say lack of proper guidelines and standard operational procedures remain major hurdles before tapping its potential.

An expert team headed by Kerala Kayaking Academy chairman V.D. Joseph examined many of the rivers in the high ranges with a team of international experts and found that most of the tributaries are ideal for whitewater kayaking. All tributaries of major rivers flowing down from the Western Ghats can be used for the sport.

“Now we are struggling to get permission from forest officials as most of the kayaking spots are in jungle zones,” said Mr Joseph. “Started with ten foreigners in 2013, this year we had 53 participants from twelve European nations and next year I am sure the number would grow manifold,” he added

If there is a state-level policy on safety norms, locations and others, he believes, it would be easier for them to promote the sport in a big way.

“We have already been receiving queries from foreigners on the next year’s schedule,” he added.

Many pointed out that the state tourism department should take the initiative for bringing out such a policy with the cooperation of the forest department.

“Now we are taking decisions at our own risk when foreigners approach us for permission,” said K.K. Sunilkumar, divisional forest officer, Nilambur.

“A policy with details like the places that could be permitted, how far the activities can be allowed into jungle streams, is there any specified season etc., should be in place. Otherwise, we will be held responsible if something went wrong as most of the participants are foreigners”.
