Students take pledge to make country a superpower

Chennai corporation workers and members of coast guard swimming rescue team paid their tributes to Dr Kalam by offering flowers
Chennai: About 300 city college students on Tuesday pledged in front of Dr Kalam’s portrait at the Marina beach and vowed they would work hard and strive for the country to be a superpower following the foot trails of the former president.
“Vingyana villake Thamizh Thai Thantha Urave, Un paatham thantha padhayil vallarasu Indiyavai Vadivamaipom naangal,” pledged students from Ethiraj, Queen Mary’s College and Dr Ambedkar Law College.
Members of the public, beach goers, youngsters from youth welfare organisations, Chennai corporation workers and members of coast guard swimming rescue team paid their tributes to Dr Kalam by offering flowers and prayers at the Marina beach. Prayers that began on morning continued till late night, said social activist Nisha Thotta.
The beach was full of activities starting from sand sculpture depicting Kalam, then there was Veda Velvi (Chanting of Tamil Prabhandams, Thiruvasakam and Vedas) as part of Moksha Deepam, a ritual conducted praying for the departed soul by members of Tamil Nadu Brahmana Ilaignar Madha Nallinakka Sangam.
