Grey fowl find S V Zoo Park perfect to roost

The number of uncommon birds has seen manifold increase in the zoo
Tirupati: Rare species Grey Jungle Fowl prevailing in Eastern and Western Ghats found a perfect asylum in SV Zoo park here. Thanks to the initiative of the zoo authority, the number of uncommon birds has seen manifold increase in the zoo.
Grey Fowl Conserva-tion and Breeding Cen-tre (GFCBC) was set up in the sprawling zoo one year ago with an aim to prevent certain species from becoming extinct.
The number of fowls has increased from two to 50 in one year. The zoo authority are taking care of their hatching, to arrest their decline in view of poaching.
GFCBC staff said the rare birds are hunted down mostly for their meat which has a lot of demand and also for its attractive, fish like feathers sought after in foreign countries. As a result their number has gone down.
These colourful, attractive birds have been drawing the attention of visitors because of their unique appearance. Zoo curator Yasodha Bhai said the number of the fowls has been increasing steadily and the day is not far away when it will reach the previous figures. As the meat of the fowl has a lot of demand, she explained, the poachers target these feathered creatures. She said the central zoo authority had entrusted responsibility to the SV Zoo Park to augment this kind by establishing a breeding centre.
