Finally Mullaperiyar dam to get exclusive police station

It also sanctioned Rs 85 lakh for procuring safety and security gadgets including CCTV cameras

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Cabinet on Thursday decided to set up exclusive police station for the safety of Mullaperiyar dam even as chief minister Mr Oommen Chandy rebutted Tamil Nadu claim about intelligence reports regarding terror threat to the vital installation.

Cabinet decided to sanction 196 posts for the police station which will be headed by assistant commandant level officer. It also sanctioned Rs 85 lakh for procuring safety and security gadgets including CCTV cameras.

When asked whether the decision to beef up security had been taken in view of Tamil Nadu government’s report on terror threat, the chief minister said that no such intelligence input had been received from the state or the central agencies based in the state or outside.

“Since apprehensions regarding dam safety were raised before the Supreme Court, as a responsible government we had to take steps from our side though there was no threat to the dam from any quarters at the moment,” he added.

The chief minister said that the police station would function from Thekaddy and cover the entire of dam area, reservoir and forest areas sensitive to the security of the installation.
