Tweets senior Congress leader asked her for diplomatic passport for coal-accused ex-minister

New Delhi: With all eyes set on External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj’s clarification on the Lalit Modi row in Parliament, the leader on Wednesday tweeted she would reveal the name of a senior Congress leader who lobbied with her for a diplomatic passport for a leader accused in the coal scam.

Former minister of state for coal (MoS) Santosh Bagrodia has been named as an accused in the coal scam and summoned to appear before a special CBI judge on August 18.

The coal scam had caused an estimated loss of over Rs 1.86 lakh crore to the exchequer, according to the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG).

Casting a shadow over the Narendra Modi government’s reforms agenda, the Monsoon Session of Parliament ran into an impasse on Day 1 as the Opposition dug in its heels seeking Swaraj’s resignation.

A combative BJP sought to turn the tide by giving notices to discuss alleged scams in Congress and Opposition-ruled states in both Houses of Parliament.

Swaraj braced to face the House on her helping former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi to get travel papers in England, the Opposition rejected the government’s offer to discuss the matter in the Rajya Sabha. The Congress stuck to its demand of “no resignations, no discussions”.

Meanwhile, the Congress has decided to stall proceedings in the Monsoon Session over Vyapam scam and Lalitgate.
