Crafting a new cinematic style

Assistant director Jeevaj Raveendran talks about his next venture

Popular short-filmmaker Jeevaj Raveendran is trying his hand at a relatively unheard style of filmmaking with his next venture, a promotional prequel video for an Irish film, The Odds.

“The Odds is the directorial debut of Ginesh Panakkal, a MalayaliIrish resident and is filmed in Ireland. It is an international level short-film, based on a real incident wherein an old man gambles on an extremely odd day of his life. What we are doing is a new concept that establishes the story and background of the man who plays the lead role in the film. We have used new footage that has nothing to do with the original film in the promotional work, Life of Odds, and it is a song sequence. However, no lyrics are used and the music is just a background track,” says Jeevaj, who is directing Life of Odds.

He adds, “The promotional film is very small and comprises just one scene. The setting is that of a gambling house and showcases the thoughts, the fears and the tension that a gambler faces and juxtaposes it with an odd situation that he is going through in his life at that moment. Along with the visual and the music, inspirational quotes would also be scrolling through the video throughout the promotional film, which would be three and a half minutes. It will discuss the importance of pursuing an opportunity or taking a risk. The visuals for the film were shot in Fort Kochi and the casting was done by our own team. It almost functions as an independent film that will help the viewers understand the original short-film better by establishing the context.” Vishnu Sarma has handled the camera for the film which is now in it’s post-production stage. Asif S.K. and Fuad Iqbal have handled the editing and GFX, and music is by Anoop Bhat.

Jeevaj is also getting ready to make his directorial debut into feature films. “I started working on Life of Odds immediately after Premam. Assisting Alphonse Putharen for the film was an amazing experience. Once Life of Odds is released, which would be in another two weeks, I will be starting the work for my feature film,” he signs off.
