Mother of Srilekha and her sister Yamini weeping at Dilsukhnagar hospital on Tuesday.
Hyderabad: The two sisters succumbed to their injuries after they were rushed to a local hospital, while the attacker fled from the scene despite locals trying to catch him. Police said that Amit was an acquaintance of Srilekha’s and he had stalked her earlier.
The incident took place at around 8.45 am at the victims’ house in Commercial Tax colony when their parents had left for work. “Amit entered their house with a sharp weapon and tried to attack Srilekha. When Yamini tried to stop him, he stabbed her several times in her stomach, and then attacked Srilekha,” said LB Nagar DCP Mr Tafseer Iqubal.
Despite being stabbed at least 14 times, Yamini escaped from Amit’s clutches and ran out of the house. She climbed the stairs to alert her neighbours, who live on the first floor. “When we came out, Yamini was about to collapse and she was heavily bleeding. By the time we reached downstairs, Srilekha had collapsed inside the house,” their neighbour Mr Ranjith Kumar told the police. Meanwhile, Amit fled from the spot leaving behind his slipper and the knife, before the neighbours could catch him. The neighbours then alerted the police and took the victims to a local hospital, where both of them succumbed to their injuries. Srilekha had been stabbed 10 times. There were bloodstains all over the house, stairs and on the bed.
The girls’ mother, Ms S. Hymavathi came back home after the neighbours alerted her. It was she who told the police about Amit Singh stalking her daughter. Later the neighbours identified him when cops showed them his picture.
According to a classmate of Srilekha, Amit and Srilekha had studied together when they were pursuing intermediate in Shadnagar. “He was stalking her when her family was living in Shadnagar one year ago, and he had threatened her too,” she said.
Though Srilekha’s parents were aware about the stalker, they had not approached the police after moving to Hyderabad. Chaitanyapuri police inspector G. Naveen Kumar said that Amit had troubled her when she was in Shadnagar. “We are verifying with the Shadnagar police regarding the issue. After the family came to the city, they have not lodged any complaints about stalking,” he said. Police have formed five teams to nab Amit, and a case for murder has been booked under IPC section 302.
Neighbours wake up to a murderous morn
It was a normal morning when Ms Singireddy Hymavathi left her home at Commercial Tax colony for her office in Shadnagar. Since her husband Mr S. Krishna Reddy was admitted at a hospital, only her two daughters, Srilekha and Yamini, were at home when she left. The senior assistant in Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan in Mahabubnagar had no inkling that her life would take a tragic turn in half an hour.
Ms Hymavathi was on her way when she got a call from her neighbours, saying that a young man had stabbed her daughters inside the house. By the time she returned and went to the hospital, her daughters were dead.
Her eldest daughter Yamini was supposed to get married to an IT professional on October 31, and the family was preparing for the function. “Her engagement took place on May 31 and the wedding date was fixed. The family had already started preparing for the wedding,” said Mr T. Nagavardhan, a relative of the family. After finishing her B.Tech, Yamini had been attending coaching at a private institute for bank exams.
Meanwhile Srilekha, who was pursuing her Final Year B.Tech at Sagar Institute of Technology at Chevella, was planning to get a job at an MNC after finishing her studies. The family had moved to Hyderabad from Shadnagar for the girls’ education and jobs.
“They have their own house at Shadnagar. But they shifted to a rented house in Kothapet in order to make it easier for both of them to pursue their education and jobs. After coming here, Yamini joined the coaching institute. Srilekha used to come to college from Shadnagar earlier, but now it became easier for her to travel since they were in Hyderabad,” said another relative.
The parents of the girls were inconsolable after receiving the bodies from the mortuary after post mortem. Their father, Mr Krishna Reddy, an RTC conductor who was already ill, broke down several times.
