Proof of Maoist movement eludes Wayanad police

His relatives had complained that police had tortured Rejeesh to elicit information regarding the Maoist activities

KOZHIKODE: Wayanad police is yet to get enough evidence over the covert activities of various Maoist leaders in the district, sources said.

Though the police brought Kainath Rejeesh, a native of Thikkodi, one of the accused who provided the vehicle for Roopesh and team, Rejeesh reportedly expressed innocence over the movement of the Maoist team in jungle villages.

His relatives had complained that police had tortured Rejeesh to elicit information regarding the Maoist activities.

Produced at judicial First Class Magistrate court at Kalpetta, Rejeesh was shifted to Kozhikode central prison later.

It was Rejeesh who supplied arms and ammunition to Maoists at various places and also helped Anoop, associate of Roopesh, to find a house and also source a SIM card and mobile phone, according to police Wayanad SP Ajeetha Begum told DC that there were 18 cases of Maoist activities and attacks in Wayanad. Rejeesh is only a supporter and more pieces of evidence would be gathered after the interrogation of Roopesh and Shyna, she added.

However, sources revealed that Wayanad police started measures to receive Roopesh and Shyna under custody for interrogation.

Mananthavadi DySP A. R. Premkumar has started the legal procedures. An application has already been submitted at the Kalpetta sessions court with the prayer. Roopesh is now lodged in Kannur central prison.
