Skimmers to clean Godavari river

Technology to make trip memorable
Rajahmundry: To ensure the Godavari river water to be clean especially along the bathing ghats where several lakhs of devotees are expected to take holy dip and perform rituals during the ensuing Godavari Pushkaralu, the civic authorities are deploying two skimmers to clear the floating trash in the river.
Municipal commissioner J. Murali who went to Allahabad recently to interact with the officials there to find out the kind of arrangements they made to organise Maha Kumbh Mela to river Ganges, found that the authorities were using the trash skimmers to clear the floating material on the river to make the water clean. After finding out their utility, the commissioner inquired with Mumbai-based agency called 'Clean Tech' and roped in two skimmers to clear the water in Godavari river during the Pushkaralu.
One skimmer has alre-ady been pressed into service in the river water in the city recently and it started collecting floating trash and clearing the river water. Another skimmer will be brought from Hyderabad as it was engaged in to clear the trash in Hussain Sagar and will be deployed in the river water after June 10.
Both the skimmers will remain functional in the river until the completion of the Godavari fete. Apart from clearing the floating material, they will also be used to ‘stir up’ the water near the bathing ghats. Normally, when a large number of devotees enter into river water and take holy dip and perform rituals near ghats, the water will become muddy. To avoid it, the authorities intend to deploy skimmers which will stir up water so that fresh water will enter the area.
