University of Hyderabad students nab poacher

Research scholar J. Ravi said J. Ashok of Gowlidoddi was spotted trying to sell a monitor lizard on Thursday

Hyderabad: University of Hyderabad (UoH) students nabbed a man who was accused of poaching animals on the campus last week.

Research scholar J. Ravi said J. Ashok of Gowlidoddi was spotted trying to sell a monitor lizard on Thursday.

He turned up on Friday with a pack of dogs, following which two students, J. Karthik and S. Vinod, alerted Mr Ravi. “We reached the spot and caught him. He had a monitor lizard which escaped,” he said. They alerted the forest department whose officials picked him up.

Mr Ravi said students had caught Ashok thrice before and had handed him over to the Gachibowli police twice. “No action was taken against him,” Mr Ravi said.

Forest department officials said that they could not catch Ashok red-handed with wild animals so taking action was not possible as it was the students of UoH who caught the poacher.
