Law Commission backs one vote count as favoured by the Election Commission

SC sought the views of Law Commission to ensure that the mechanism was foolproof

New Delhi: In an attempt to prevent intimidation of voters by candidates after declaration of results, the Law Commission of India has suggested to the Supreme Court that all votes polled in an election must be counted together using a “totaliser” mechanism in electronic voting machines (EVMs), rather than counting of votes booth-wise.

Though the Election Commission was in favour of counting of votes together, the apex court sought the views of the Law Commission to ensure that the mechanism was foolproof.
