AAP softens stance on ‘defaming’ media

May 6 controversial circular issued by the AAP government
New Delhi: The Arvind Kejriwal government informed the Supreme Court on Friday that it was willing to withdraw a controversial circular issued by his government for filing defamation cases against media houses for adverse news reports.
Having got a stay of defamation cases filed against Mr Kejriwal, his government told the Apex Court that the object of the circular was to prevent the misuse of defamation law provided under Section 499/500 of IPC and provide safeguards against its misuse.
On May 14, a Bench of Justices Dipak Misra and P.C. Pant had criticised the Delhi government for issuing the circular and wanted to know as to how it was issued when Mr Kejriwal himself had challenged Sections 499/500 relating to defamation. Mr Kejriwal had sought quashing of the provisions in a case of defamation filed against him by senior advocate Amit Sibal son of former Law Minister Kapil Sibal.
The May 6 controversial circular issued by the AAP government had asked the officials to file defamation cases against media houses if there were adverse reports.
