312 dengue cases in Bengaluru: BBMP identifies key areas

Mosquitoes breeding indoors is the biggest problem

Bengaluru: Over a month, the city recorded 200 cases of dengue, but within a span of one week, nearly 100 cases were reported. “As of now, 312 dengue cases have been reported within the BBMP limits," said Dr Manoranjan Hegde, Chief Medical Officer, BBMP.

With the sudden increase, the Palike has identified key areas where the numbers are showing a rise and is planning to step up source reduction and awareness programmes, Dr Hegde said. “C.V. Raman Nagar, Vijaynagar, Mahadevapura, Jayanagar, Rajajinagar, and Mahalakshmipuram have seen a sudden increase in the number of cases,” said Dr Naveen Kumar, mosquito control officer, BBMP. C.V. Raman Nagar has reported 22 cases, while Mahadevpura 20 cases. “Rains, which cause water logging in houses, are to blame for the sudden increase,” said Dr Kumar.

“The numbers have certainly come down and NIV has not reported any cases in the last two days,” he said. In a bid to curb the numbers, the BBMP launched a mobile app in Malleswaram for larvae detection. “Anyone who sees larvae formation anywhere can take a picture and send it to the local health officer, who will take action. This app will be launched at other places in due course,” he said.

On the constraints in curbing the numbers, Dr Hegde said, “Mosquitoes breeding indoors is the biggest problem, but people do not allow our employees inside the house to conduct fogging and other exercises. We have hence taken the help of NGOs and volunteers to spread awareness.” The BBMP has charted an action plan and devised day-to-day activities, including fumigation across the city, to contain dengue, he said.
