A divine collaboration

M.G. Sreekumar together with Priyadarshan make a devotional album
Ambalapuzha is synonymous with the very famous Sree Krishna Temple and the Ambalapuzha palpayasam. Not many know that it is also the home of M.G. Sreekumar and Priyadarshan who are good friends and have grown up here.
The duo came together for a devotional album dedicated to Lord Sree Krishna. While M.G. Sreekumar has already done a multitude of devotional albums, it is a first for director Priyadarshan as far as a devotional album is concerned. The director kept aside all his Bollywood schedules to be a part of the album and joined hands with the singer to picturise the ten soulful songs.
Sreekumar says, “The entire shoot has taken place in and around the Ambalapuzha temple and I have composed the music. Mohanlal, Sujatha, Shwetha Mohan, Nayana, Madhu Balakrishnan and I are the singers. Since, Mohanlal, Priyadarshan and I are close friends you can also see this album as an ode to our friendship!” Sreekumar mentions that owing to Mohanlal’s hectic shooting schedule it is only his song that has been shot at the superstar’s home. Terming the experience of working with Priyadarshan as totally enjoyable, Sreekumar says, “Since the album has a seasoned director and experienced cameraman S. Kumar behind it, the total look is very professional — be it the camera angles, the colour tone and the entire production. This album is Priyadarshan’s and my way of thanking the Lord and as an offering.” The album has been produced by Ambalapuzha resident C. Radhakrishnan.
The album has not been produced with any thought of commercial gains. Sreekumar also shares his apprehension on the state of the music industry. He says, “This CD cannot be sold in shops but only in the temple premises. The unchecked piracy has killed the music industry. Now only a limited amount of CD’s get sold. It is time for the government to do something about the piracy that has deep roots. Releasing a CD is not feasible anymore because a cheaper pendrive with 150 songs is less expensive than a CD. The livelihood of a lot of singers, musicians and others connected with music are at stake here. Periodic raids happen but that is only a farce and nothing comes out of this because there are powerful lobbies at work. This happens only in India and nowhere else in the world.”
