State move on BBMP poll: BJP Bengaluru MLAs may skip rest of monsoon session

BJP legislators elected from constituencies in Bengaluru have decided to skip the rest of legislature session

Belagavi: With Chief Minister Siddaramaiah hinting that his government would approach the Supreme Court seeking stay of the high court’s order on elections to BBMP, BJP legislators elected from constituencies in Bengaluru have decided to skip the rest of legislature session and return to the state capital to draw up the party’s strategies.

Sensing the government's intention to seek postponement of BBMP polls through a SLP in the apex court, former BJP corporator Ramamurthy had filed the caveat in the Supreme Court. The legislators, however, have made up their mind about heading back to Bengaluru. Former law minister Suresh Kumar said "since the government is planning to file an appeal in the Supreme Court, I have decided to leave for Bengaluru on Tuesday".

Ditto with members of the Legislative Council, including V. Somanna and Ashwathnarayana, who decided to skip the rest of the session, if government approaches the apex court for postponement of BBMP polls.

Party sources said that Opposition deputy leader R. Ashok and city MLAs also decided to leave for Bengaluru. “If government files the petition seeking elections should be held as per 2010 census, the court will issue notices to the respondent. To chalk out the strategy to prevent the state government from postponing elections, we have to be in Bengaluru,” said a BJP legislator.
