2 skill varsities to be set up in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh

The varsities would be on the lines of the National Skills Qualification Framework mooted by the Union government last year

Hyderabad: The Centre will establish two skill development universities in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Union Minister of State for skill development and entrepreneurship Rajiv Pratap Rudy said here on Sunday that the varsities would train youth and help them earn the requisite skills to become employable.

He also said that the government would table the National Skill Development University Bill in the upcoming Parliament Monsoon Session.

Initially, the varsities will be set up in Bihar, TS and AP. Mr Rudy added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would initiate the Skill Development Mission on July 15.

Speaking to the media, Mr Rudy said though there were plenty of conventional graduates like engineers, lawyers, there was a huge dearth of skilled workers like carpenters, plumbers, electricians etc. The varsities would be on the lines of the National Skills Qualification Framework mooted by the Union government last year.

“Such workers are available in small numbers but they don’t have any qualification. They work as apprentices and learn the trade themselves but their skills are not certified. These skill development universities will help create skilled youth,” Mr Rudy explained.

In another meeting with SkillPro, a skill development agency, its chairman Ananth Rao informed Mr Rudy that the ministry would require about Rs 6 lakh crore over five years to skill 50 crore youth.
