Authorities fail to act on illegal acid sales

Over 10 acid attacks reported recently in the district
Vijayawada: Union Home Minister Mr Rajnath Singh, a few months ago announced amendments in Code of Criminal Procedure to ensure speedy conviction of persons accused of acid attacks. Earlier Supreme Court also directed concerned authorities to ensure that acid of any type is not sold to individuals and unauthorised persons. But nothing seems to be stopping miscreants from acquiring acid and using it to threaten and kill women.
Though curbing of acid sale to unauthorised persons is the need of the hour, lack of co-ordination between various departments is leaving a chance to miscreants to do as they please. In most of the acid attack cases reported in the district availability of semi- concentrated acid in regular shops turned an opportunity for revenge takers.
Over 10 acid attacks were reported in the district in recent times apart from Friday’s acid attack on P. Rani of Telaprolu. According to law, a fine of Rs 50, 000 has to be imposed against shopkeepers who sell acid without maintaining a record of their customers.
So far no such cases were reported in city and district limits. It is said that police so far do not have proper instructions by the state government to keep an eye on the sale of acid and avoid acid attacks.cases were reported in city and district limits. It is said that police so far does not have proper instructions by the state government to keep an eye on the sale of acid and avoid acid attacks.
