Team India opener Shikhar Dhawan trades gift bike for cash

He was gifted a motorbike for his match-winning 75 in the final ODI against Bangladesh

Mumbai: Team India opener Shikhar Dhawan has traded in the motorbike he got for playing match-winning innings during the third ODI against Bangladesh in Dhaka, for cash.

Speaking from Dhaka, chief selector of Bangladesh Cricket Board, Faruk Ahmed, disclosed, “Shikhar Dhawan had decided to claim the cash equivalent for the motorbike. He will receive this amount in India.”

The opening batsman was handed a dummy key of the motorbike for the 75 runs he made against Bangladesh on Thursday. Generally, players don’t bring back the vehicles they win in foreign countries.

However, there are exceptions, the most notable being Ravi Shastri. Shastri had been gifted an Audi 100 for becoming the Champion of Champions in 1985.

And even if Dhawan had intentions of bringing the motorbike to India, it would not have served much purpose.

“Shikhar is not so fond of two-wheelers anymore. Of course, he used to drive bikes with passion in the earlier years,” said his father Mahendra Pal Dhawan from Delhi.

“If it was a four-wheeler, it would have served some purpose as he has his own family,” Pal Dhawan added.
